Saturday started early with great anticipation and when we came down the hill to Tumbleweed we thought we had stepped back in time. With the chuckwagons a-cooking and the reenactors milling around waiting for check-in and team briefing.
Dusty Webb president, of The Old West Living History Foundation, presided over the team meeting. The teams were briefed in Safety and voted on judging style. Soon they were picking order of performance. The Vigilantes opted to go last in event that some of the folks that were attending the rescheduled Wild West Show could get back before we got on. The rest of the teams picked numbers from a hat and off we went.

Our Gun Safety program is the backbone of The Vigilantes. We perform it everywhere we go, having given the oath to over 2600 children this last year alone. In our Gun Safety program we show the children what kind of power all guns really have. After a demonstration of the firepower of our guns, we teach the children the only one rule they need to know. "If they see a gun or a bullet, unaccompanied by an adult, to run and tell an adult and that adult will buy you Ice Cream that night for supper." The children swear to the oath and then they become Official Junior Osage Valley Vigilantes and receive a Vigilantes badge and a certificate on parchment paper reminding them of their oath. Plus they get a American Flag lapel pin.

We always get a "Good Feeling" after gun safety, especially when we see the adults connecting with their children in gun safety dialogue!
